Amid our busy lives, it’s too easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle, often neglecting our well-being. This week, we want to encourage you to take just 10 minutes out of your day to step outside and go for a walk. Yes, it can be that simple

 The Benefits of Walking 

 The benefits of walking extend far beyond just physical fitness. Recent research highlights that even a short walk can significantly impact our mental and emotional well-being. According to a study published in the Canadian Medical Association, discussed in Portia Clark’s CBC Talk (1), physical exercise supports nerve cell growth in the hippocampus. This improvement in nerve cell connections helps alleviate depression. The optimal dose of exercise is 45-60 minutes, 3-5 times a week, but even smaller amounts can be beneficial.  

Today, we encourage you to start with 10 minutes and gradually build up the time.  

Why is it Beneficial?  

 Whether it’s a stroll around the block or a brisk walk in nature, here’s why it’s worth taking those few moments out of your day: 

  • Walking outdoors can help reduce stress levels by promoting relaxation and providing a change of scenery from the pressures of work or home life. Spending time outside exposes us to natural sunlight, which is essential for our bodies to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating mood and can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety 
  • Walking also allows us to be fully present in the moment, focusing on the sights, sounds, and sensations of our surroundings. This mindfulness practice can help quiet the mind and reduce rumination on stressful thoughts.   Incorporating a daily walk into your routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you schedule it into your calendar as a dedicated break or simply take advantage of opportunities throughout the day, find a time that works for you. Consider inviting a colleague or friend to join you for added accountability and social connection.
